“Fill OBC vacancies only with OBC candidates”

Dean of Colleges Nayanjot Lahiri writes to DU colleges on the issue

NEW DELHI: Almost a month after a letter was sent to all Delhi University colleges asking them to follow the guidelines on ad hoc appointments against Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe vacancies, a fresh communication was despatched to them recently about implementation of reservation for the Other Backward Classes in teaching posts.

In a letter to the colleges, Dean of Colleges Nayanjot Lahiri wrote: “A letter was sent on May 25, 2007, communicating the approval of Delhi University’s Executive Council to the University Grants Commission letter regarding implementation of reservation policy in respect of OBCs for filling up teaching posts at the level of lecturer. Consequently it is essential for you to fill up such reserved posts with OBC candidates only.” Prof. Lahiri in her letter has emphasised that this also applies to ad hoc appointments against OBC vacancies in the colleges, which “must be filled with OBC candidates only”. Therefore, the department concerned is required to send them an OBC panel for such appointments.

Also, in a letter to the heads of all departments, Prof. Lahiri has instructed them to prepare an ad hoc panel against OBC vacancies in the colleges.

Rules violated

It is generally seen that some colleges have been “violating” rules pertaining to implementation of OBC reservation in teaching positions.

“There are many colleges that are flouting the rules. Even when they are appointing ad hoc teachers against reserved vacancies, they select applicants from the general category, though the University says that these posts must be filled with OBC candidates only,” said an Academic Council member, Pradeep Kumar.
