KOCHI: A cargo vessel which left the Mangalore port on Saturday for Lakshadweep has been reported missing. The vessel, with seven crewmembers on board, carried 140 tonnes of groceries. The Coast Guard deployed an aircraft and a ship to search for the vessel. However, it could not trace the vessel till late in the evening on Wednesday. The motorised sailing vessel, m.s.v. Lakshadweep, left Mangalore at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday and was scheduled to arrive at Kalpeni at 10 a.m. on Monday. When the ship did not reach the destination hours after its scheduled arrival time, the authorities alerted the 13 marine communication towers of the Lakshadweep administration as well Coast Guard and other agencies. The vessel is owned by the Lakshadweep Cooperative Marketing Federation. Though the vessel is fitted with GPS (global positioning system) and other modern communication facilities, there has been no communication from it for more than two days, officials said. The majority of the crewmembers are from Tuticorin.
