Rail station set ablaze; DSP dies in encounter

Special correspondent

Guwahati: Miscreants set ablaze a railway station in Assam’s North Cachar Hills District on Wednesday afternoon during a 36-hour bandh called by All Dimasa Students’ Union.

Principal Secretary Home Subhash Das told The Hindu that a group of bandh supporters went to Bagetar railway station under the Haflong police station around 1.30 p.m. and set it ablaze after asking all the employees to come out. The station was partially damaged in the fire, he said.

The ADSU had called the bandh, which came to an end on Wednesday, to press for early solution to the Dimasa problem and holding of peace talks with the militant Dima Halam Daogah. The bandh affected normal life in the hill district which marred by sporadic incidents of violence.

In another incident which occurred in Paham Umdoh village of Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya bordering Assam, a deputy superintendent of police of the Meghalaya Police and a cadre of Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) were killed in an encounter. A group of HNLC militants fired on a police party which had launched a combing operation in the village on tip off about their presence. The DSP was rushed to Basistha Army Base Hospital in the city where he succumbed to his injuries, the police said.

The police also captured two militants involved in the encounter.
