Centre for Life Sciences coming up

COIMBATORE: The Centre for Life Sciences that is coming up at the Bharathiar University will ensure cross movement for scientists besides being a nodal centre for students and faculty to undertake projects, G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor, said here on Tuesday.

“Besides the appointed professors, there will also be an international network of scientists. An exclusive hotline connectivity and website will also be created for the centre. In the first phase 60 laboratories in India will be connected through the hotline. In Phase Two, it will be extended to encompass a number of countries,” the Vice-Chancellor told The Hindu.

The centre that would function 24x7 will cost Rs. 20 crore. A joint project of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Bharathiar University, the centre would serve a consortium of universities.

The Vice-Chancellor said that scientists and their teams who came up with community-oriented projects would be given incentives. Not only students and faculty, but also industry could come to the centre for solutions.

The centre would work for obtaining ISO certification soon, he added.
