This Day That Age
Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Communist Party leader, on November 6 called for an East-West meeting of world leaders to “reach a mutual understanding on the banning of war as a method of settling international problems, to stop the cold war, and the armaments race, and to establish relations between states on the basis of co-existence.” Mr. Khrushchev, addressing 1,300 deputies and 15,000 guests at a meeting of the Supreme Soviet (Parliament) in Moscow, also said that ideological questions should not be settled on the basis of war “but through competition.” He said an understanding should be reached to secure “a better satisfaction of man’s needs.” He said the “victory of the Soviet Union” in launching its Sputniks had caused fear and dismay among its enemies, who had seen how strong Soviet Science was. But he gave a “No-War” pledge on behalf of the Soviet Government and declared that co-existence was still the cornerstone of Russian policy.
