dated November 8, 1957: Vaigai in spate

The level of water in Vaigai is rising and had reached over seven feet on November 7. The floods indicate heavy rain in the catchment area and in the lower reaches of the river. The Vaigai remains dry for most of the year and this is the first time in recent years that the river is in spate. The floods have caused traffic jams on both sides of the narrow Albert Victor Bridge now being repaired, as the causeway across the river, intended for pedestrian, cart, rickshaw and lorry traffic, is submerged under one to two feet of water.
