Tehelka sting

This refers to the article “The sting in its social and ethical context” (Nov. 7) on the Tehelka exposé of the 2002 Gujarat riots. The operation reveals a very disturbing trend that resulted in rape, death and destruction in the post-Godhra riots. Can we really attribute motives to the journalist because he chose this particular time to make his findings public? The argument implies that had the findings been made public before the Gujarat elections were announced, they would have been more credible.

We need to have a law saying no political leader can remain the head of government for more than two terms. If a party cannot throw up a fresh leadership, it forfeits its right to represent any point of view. Only a fresh leadership in Gujarat can clear the air of communal disharmony and suspicion.

Although the exposé has produced credible evidence against the perpetrators of the 2002 pogrom, the timing and the manner in which it has been dealt with raise serious concerns. All right-thinking persons will agree that reviving the ghost of the riots is just what the Hindutva brigade wants. The minorities have been haunted under the Modi dispensation. If an investigation helps in bringing back to power the very forces responsible for their plight, it is of no use.
