Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Eight persons, including a woman, were arrested on Tuesday night by personnel from the Kulathupuzha Forest Range office on charges of killing a barking deer and a hornbill.

Forest Range Officer Shaji Kumar said the arrests were made from a private rubber plantation adjoining the Sangili forests of the range. Those arrested were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate at Punalur on Wednesday. They have been remanded till November 20.

Mr. Shaji Kumar said a jeep and a bike used by the culprits were also taken into custody. Four more persons, who were in the gang, managed to escape, he said. The arrests and seizures were made following a tip-off. The arrest was made while they were chopping the carcass of the deer for being shared, Mr. Kumar added.
