All-India university badminton from today

KOLENCHERRY: The all-India inter-university badminton championship for men and women begins at the St. Peter’s College Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

Sixteen teams — the top four finishers of the four zonals — will figure in the three-day knock-out tournament.

“Beating all-India champions Bangalore and winning the men’s South Zone event here makes us the favourite,” host Mahatma Gandhi University Coach, Paul Mathew, said.

“But I don’t have a clear idea about how the other teams look. I think Bombay, Delhi and Punjab should be good,” he added.

St. Joseph’s HSS triumphs

St. Joseph’s HSS (Pulincunnu) won the boys’ title in the fourth Lourdean all-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament, which concluded at the Lourdean floodlit stadium, Kottayam, on Tuesday night.

In the final, St. Joseph’s HSS (Pulincunnu) defeated St. Ephremes (Mannanam) 54-31. SN Trust HSS (Kollam) had earlier won the girls title.

The result: St. Joseph’s HSS, Punlincunnu 54 (Ashin Xavier 21, Sanju A. Joy 13) bt St. Ephremes, Mannanam 31 (Rony Mathew 11, Noble Antony 10).

St. Joseph’s, GV Raja in semifinals

St. Joseph’s HSS Pulicunnu and GV Raja Sports School entered the semifinals of the Ist Good Shepherd Ever Rolling Trophy All-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament for boys at Changanassery on Wednesday

In the quarterfinals, St Joseph’s HSS defeated S C Seminary HSS, Tiruvalla 56-40 while G V Raja Sports School got the better of Kristhu Jyothi HSS, Changanacherry 26-16

Earlier in the pre-quarterfinal matches, St Mary’s, HSS Champakulam beat MTHS, Kurianoor (52-20) and St Thomas HSS, Kozhencherry scraped past host Good Shepherd Public School, Thenganna (29-25).

The results: Quarterfinals: G V Raja Sports School Tivandrum 26 (Dinu V Thanmpi 11) bt Kristhu Jyothi HSS, Chettipuzha 16 (Cean Jose 10); St Joseph’s HSS Pulicunnu 56 (Samju Joseph 10) bt S.C. Seminary HSS Tiruvalla 40 (Shine10, Arun10)

Pre-quarterfinals: St Thomas HSS, Kozhencherry 29 (J. Aeun 10) bt Good Shepherd Public School Thengana 26 (Asby Joseph 10); St Marys HSS Champakulam 52 (Robin Joseph 22, George Devassia10) bt MTHSS Kurianoor 20 (J. Benson 10).

Emphatic win for KSEB

KSEB crushed Christ Nagar Youth Movement 91-45 to enter the final of the District ‘A’ division league in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

R. Manoj (30) and T.S. Abhilash (18) were the prominent scorers for KSEB which led 56-32 at half-time.

Subin (19) and Bony (10) did well for the loser.

The results: KSEB 91 (R.Manoj 30, T.S.Abhilash 18) bt Christ Nagar Youth Movement 45 (Subin 19, Bony 10). Go-karting camp

The Motorsports Association of Kerala has decided to conduct a go-karting camp for children at the Cochin International Airport premises, Nedumbassery, from Thursday.

Former national champion Mazdayar Vatcha will train the children (above eight years) at the four-day camp which will be held near the airport’s cargo complex from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
