VIJAYAWADA: The city is all set to witness thousands of budding athletes in action from all over the country as the four-day Junior National Athletic meet unfolds at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium from November 24 to 27, according to MP and chairman of the organising committee Lagadapati Rajagopal.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Rajagopal said competitions would be held in the age categories of under-14, 16, 18 and 20 both for boys and girls. “Athletic Federation of India (AFI) has allotted the meet to Vijayawada after the successful staging of the event by Krishna District Amateur Athletic Association (KDAAA) in 2004. Over 2,500 athletes are expected to take part in the four-day event,” he added.

Mr. Rajagopal said an organising committee was formed with District Collector Navin Mittal as president along with the District Sports Authority, people’s representatives, district officials, sports promoters and officials. “Eleven sub committees are formed for the smooth conduct of the event,” he explained.

The mascot of the event, a horse christened ‘Krishna’, was released amidst wild cheering. The event is conducted with an estimated expenditure of Rs. 60 lakh and Reliance Industries Limited is the title sponsor of the meet.

DSDO B. Sudhakar said all events will be held at IGMC stadium and track events will be held on grass tracks. KDAAA president Ramesh Jain and Secretary A. Raghavendra Rao were also present.
