BANGALORE: An alert public on Tuesday night apprehended three armed men and foiled their attempt to loot two kg gold from a jewellery making unit in Ulsoor Gate police station limits. The three intruders who were beaten up by the public and the jewellery unit employees have been admitted to hospital. Four employees, who were injured in the scuffle with the robbers, too have been admitted in a hospital, the police said. Around 11 p.m., three men barged into Mohan Paul’s gold ornament manufacturing unit on the fourth floor of Khan Complex situated on Kumbarpet Main Road when the employees were busy crafting jewellery. They pointed a pistol at Mr. Mohan Paul and threatened his employees with a sword and a razor. The robbers, who were carrying a radio-like object, told the employees that it was a bomb and they would explode it if the gold ingots and ornaments were not handed over to them. After collecting the gold from the employees, the armed men tried to snatch a gold chain Mr. Mohan Paul was wearing. When he resisted, they slapped him and attacked his brother Bouncy Paul on the chest with a sword, the police said. On hearing the screams, a few people who were in the second and third floors rushed to the top floor and attacked the intruders with iron rods and clubs. On noticing the scuffle in the Khan Complex, Rafiq from the neighbouring building alerted the police. Later, Mr. Rafiq and a few residents of the area downed the rolling shutters on the ground floor of the Khan Complex and prevented robbers from escaping. When the police, who arrived there in five minutes, opened the shutters, the public thrashed the trio. The police took the three severely injured men into custody. The three men were identified as Shubhankar alias Bouncy (34) and Sajeed (26), both from Hoogly district, and Shahjan (19) from Howrah district in West Bengal.
