Those with doctoral degrees to get exemption

M.Phil classes to begin on November 1 from next year

Academic Council meeting held

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Academic Council of the University of Kerala has decided not to exempt those with an M.Phil degree from qualifying the National Eligibility Test (NET) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for getting appointed as lecturers in colleges.

However, those with a doctoral degree (Ph.D) need not write the NET to become eligible for such appointments, the Council decided at its meeting on Wednesday. Though the Council had already taken a decision to this effect earlier, this issue was discussed at Wednesday’s meeting following a directive from the High Court, a press note issued here said.

From the next academic year, M.Phil programmes will begin on November 1.

Now, M.Phil programmes begin in July for some subjects and in November for others. Many who complete the PG programme are often unable to get admission for the M.Phil programmes beginning in July. The Council took the decision to shift the date of commencement after taking into consideration this situation also, the press note said.

The Council decided to refer to the Syndicate sub-committee on research the issue of granting recognition to the M.Sc Marine Geology programme of the Mangalore University. The framing of new guidelines for admission to PG programmes will be discussed, after a detailed study, at the next meeting of the Council.

The meeting decided to refer to the Faculty and Board of Studies of Medicine the question of accepting the MBBS degree of the Transci University, South Africa as a qualification for higher studies.

It was also decided that degree granted by universities through autonomous colleges need be recognised only after a detailed study.

The Council approved the scheme and syllabus of the M.Sc Bioinformatics programme and the PG Diploma in Geomatics course.

Recognition

The meeting decided to recognise the LLB degree of the Bharathi Vidyapeeth deemed university and the BA Double Main (Arabic and Islamic History) degree of the Kannur University.

The Council decided not to accept the M.Sc Electronics degree of the Bharathidasan University as a qualifying degree for admission to the M.Tech programme.

The meeting resolved to exempt ‘private registration’ candidates of the BA History course from internal marks. The granting of such marks will be limited to regular students of the programme, it was decided.

The Council referred to the Syndicate the issue of giving recognition to the regular M.Ed degree programme of the Annamalai University.

Syndicate member A.A. Rasheed informed the meeting that 11 appointments were made to teaching posts after this Syndicate assumed office.

Syndicate member C. Bhaskaran told the meeting that additional seats will be allowed in colleges only after ensuring that those institutions had adequate facilities.

Syndicate member P. Mohammed Kunhu said teachers were being drafted for evaluation and revaluation duty on the basis of seniority, the press note added.
