VISAKHAPATNAM: Police Commissioner N. Sambasiva Rao warned history-sheeters of stringent action if they indulge in activities that rob Visakhapatnam of its epithet of a ‘peaceful city’.

The Police Commissioner counselled some 160 persons, on whom rowdy-sheets were opened, at a ‘durbar’ organised at the Police Stadium here on Wednesday. He spoke to them individually and took spot decisions by lifting the cases against some of them who gave up rowdy activities.

He also enquired from the police officers concerned about the character of the accused and when convinced that they had given up their unruly behaviour, ordered lifting of cases on some of them. He sought the assistance of some of the reformed rowdy elements to act as police informers.

When he was not satisfied with the replies given by some of the history-sheeters, the Commissioner directed the police officers concerned to keep a watch on their movements. He assured them that the cases would be lifted if they did not indulge in criminal activities for the next six months.

Strict vigil

Later, speaking to the media, Mr. Sambasiva Rao felt that involving family members could make the rowdy-sheeters give up their wayward behaviour. He advised rowdy-sheeters to give up alcohol and go home by 10 p.m. and spend time with their family members instead of picking up quarrels on the roads. The police officers would visit the houses of the rowdy-sheeters at random and check whether they were drunk. Breath analysers would be used for the purpose.

He was shocked when an Armed Reserve constable was produced before him. The accused was suspended in the past for allegedly beating a ward boy at the King George Hospital (KGH). He directed the police officers to keep a watch on his movements.

When a drug pedlar Prasad pleaded lifting of the history sheet on him, the Commissioner asked him to give information on the gang. The pedlar said that he was selling the ganja at Kobbari Thota slum. The Commissioner directed the City Task Force police to conduct a raid on the slum. When asked whether there was any political influence seeking lifting of history sheets, Mr. Sambasiva Rao replied in the negative. He said that all the 160 history-sheeters in the city were summoned today and barring a few of them who were either absconding or couldn’t attend due to their sickness, all of them had turned up.

Deputy Commissioners of Police K.V.V. Gopala Rao (law and order) and P. Viswa Prasad (traffic and security) were present.
