India wins youth team championship

HYDERABAD: N. Shantimala of India won the silver in the girls’ 48kg category on the final day of the eighth Asian judo championship and the inaugural Asian youth championship at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday.

Another Indian girl, Kalpana Das Thoudam, also settled for the silver in the 52kg category.

However, India won the team championship in the Asian youth championship and Japan clinched the honours in the Asian junior championship.

The host, by virtue of its tally of 11 medals — one gold, two silver and a bronze in boys’ section and one gold, four silver and two bronze in girls’ category — emerged the team champion in the youth edition. Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan finished second and third respectively.

In the junior championship, Japan hogged the limelight on Wednesday winning six of the eight gold medals at stake.

Korea and Uzbekistan finished second and third respectively, while India finished fifth in this event.

Kyeong-Scob Sin (Kor), 2. Chouba Ahmadzadeh (Iri), 3. Talgat Amrenov (Kaz); Above-100kg: 1. Kamikawa Daiki (Jpn), 2. Dianagulov Talant (Kgz), 3. Alan Turyssov (Kaz).

Girls: 45kg: 1. Yomogida Tomoka (Jpn), 2. Chanda D. Wijerathna (SL), 3. Aigerim Madenova (Kaz); 48kg: 1. Kondo Kaori (Jpn), 2. N. Shantimala (Ind), 3. Hsia-Men Chen (Tpe); 52kg: 1. Kagaya Chiho (Jpn), 2. Kalpana Das Thoudam (Ind), 3. Lila Adhikari (Nep); 57kg: 1. Maki Shizuka (Jpn), 2. Gulze Uralbayeva (Kaz), 3. Ji-Hye Myung (Kor). — Principal Correspondent
