Kochi: The Ernakulam district panchayat in association with the State Youth Welfare Board will organise ‘Keralotsavam’ — the annual district-level arts, culture and sports festival, from November 12 to 15.

Sebastian Paul, MP, will inaugurate the festival at 3.30 p.m. on Monday. District panchayat president P.S. Shyla will preside over the function. District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, P. Ramakrishnan, vice-chairman, Kerala State Youth Welfare Board and G. Sukumaran, secretary, district panchayat, will address the gathering. There will be more participation this year. “We are organising district-level competitions straight after grama panchayat-level competitions,” Ms. Shyla said. Considering the increased participation, Sports Council was entrusted with conducting sports and games events.

Five venues

The events would be held at five venues – the Priyadarshini Auditorium of the district panchayat, a temporary stage to be set in front of the district panchayat office, the two halls of the District Co-operative Bank and the M.A.H School.

There would be competition in 71 events with the major highlights being the competition in coconut tree climbing, ploughing and planting.

The estimated budget of the fest is Rs.5 lakh. “District panchayat has set apart Rs.3 lakh for organising the event, while the State government will contribute Rs.1.10 lakh,” Ms. Shyla said. Besides, the Corporation would provide Rs.10,000, municipalities Rs.5,000 and panchayats Rs. 1,000, she said.

She expressed hope of maintaining the district’s winning streak in the State-level competitions.

Ernakulam has been the winner in the last two editions of the State-level competitions.

Ms. Shyla will inaugurate the valedictory function on Thursday at 5 p.m. K.N. Sugathan, district panchayat vice-president, will preside over the function.
