Decides to put pressure on authorities

Meet with foreign airlines’ regional heads held

Aero-bridge facility still to be set up at Karipur

Kozhikode: Speakers at a meeting organised jointly by the Malabar Chamber of Commerce (MCC) and the Calicut Airport Committee have called for putting pressure on authorities for allowing operation of foreign airline companies from the Karipur airport here from January 2008 itself.

At an interactive meeting with Rajiv Nambiar, general manager, India, Gulf Air, and regional heads of other foreign airlines here on Friday, the speakers alleged continuing discrimination against Malabar, especially in the case of the airport.

Presiding over the meeting, MCC president P. Zakeer pointed out that Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi had said that foreign airline companies would operate from Karipur only from April 2008. However, all should strive to work for the their operation from January itself.

District Congress Committee president K.C. Abu stressed the need for bringing in foreign airline companies to operate from the airport from January itself. He urged all to strive towards the goal.

Rajiv Nambiar said that Gulf Air was ready to operate from the Karipur airport if the Director-General of Civil Aviation gave its nod. “We are all willing to operate from Karipur airport,” he assured the meeting.

P.V. Gangadharan, former president of the Chamber, said that once foreign airline companies started operating from Karipur, ticket rates would come down. He said that aero-bridge facility was still to be set up at Karipur.
