Modernisation work on the canal to cost over Rs. 900 crore Contractors’ bills still await clearance from Government DAVANGERE: Secretary of the Bharatiya Raitha Okkuta C. Narasimhappa has urged the Government to immediately release funds for the ongoing modernisation of the Bhadra canal system. He said that any further delay in the release of funds would result in contractors stopping work, which would adversely affect farmers here. Speaking to presspersons here on Friday Mr. Narasimhappa said that though over 25 per cent of the work had been completed, the Government had failed to clear the bills. The contractors, who had invested huge amounts of money in the project, had not yet been paid. “If work is not completed by December as scheduled, and if water is not let into the canal to feed the achcut, farmers would stand to incur a loss of over Rs. 400 crore,” he noted. Summer cropThe Government should pay the contractors immediately so that farmers could grow their summer crop. A large number of them who grew summer crops needed water after January for cultivation, he said. The previous coalition Government had approved modernisation work on the canal worth over Rs. 900 crore and had appointed agencies to carry out work. Mr. Narasimhappa also urged the Government to purchase maize from farmers by offering them the support price without any restrictions and added that if it came forward to purchase the crop, price stability would be ensured. He also asked the Government not to put a ceiling on the purchase of maize from farmers. There had been a record yield of over one crore quintals of maize in the district this year, he said. Shanbog Nagaraj Rao, Lingaraju, and others leaders of the Okkuta were present.
