Cheruthuruthy: Culture Minister M.A. Baby called for efforts to check decadent trends in the world of culture. He was addressing a meeting to present the Kalamandalam fellowship and awards for 2006 at Kerala Kalamandalam here on Friday evening. “Institutions such as the kalamandalam have a major role to play in checking undesirable trends in the cultural world.” He presented the Kalamandalam fellowship to percussionist Cherpulassery Sivan. Others who received awards included Sadanam Balakrishnan (Kathakali), Kalanilayam Unnikrishnan (Kathakali music), Kalamandalam Rama Chakyar (Koodiyattom), Kalamandalam Leelamma (dance), Kalamandalam Devaki (Thullal), C.K. Sivarama Pillai (author of the book Kathakali Swaroopam), K.Ramachandran (director of the documentary, ‘Kalam’), Kalamandalam Kesavan (Kalaratnam award for art) and L.S. Rajagopalan (Kalaratnam award for research) and Kalamandalam Harinarayanan (Bhagavathar Kunjunni Thampuran endowment award). The Minister called on ailing A.S.N. Nambeesan, winner of the Mukunda Raja Smrithi prize, at a private hospital and presented the award. A committee, chaired by kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair, had decided the awards.
