Seven killed in separate accidents

Panchayat member among killed


KOCHI: Seven persons were killed and 63 injured in separate accidents in the State on Friday.

Three persons of a family were killed when the car in which they were travelling hit a tipper lorry parked by the roadside at Mattoor, near Kalady, on Friday. A person who was repairing the tipper lorry was also killed in the accident, which occurred around 7.30 a.m.

Those in the car who were killed were Ashokan, 72, his wife, Saudamini, 68, and their son, Ramesh, 36, of Valappad, Thrissur, the police said. The fourth person was identified as Paulose, 85, of Mattoor.

Two of the car passengers, Sooraj and Baburaj, were injured. They have been admitted to Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly.

The car was bound for Chelamattam, near Kalady. The passengers were on their way to take part in the ‘balitharpan’ ritual for another of the couple’s sons who had died earlier.

Two killed, 60 hurt

In Palakkad, two persons were killed and 60 injured when two private buses coming from opposite sides collided at Vadanamkurissy, near Pattambi, on Friday.

The buses were operating between Shoranur and Pattambi.

The deceased were identified as Smitha Nair, 30, wife of Sivakumar of Chalissery, a teacher working with K.M.C. Orphanage School at Kulappully, and T.P. Dinesh, 18, student of a private ITC at Shoranur.

One of the injured whose condition was stated to be serious has been admitted to Thrissur Medical College. The others are undergoing treatment in hospitals at Pattambi.

Panchayat member

In Alappuzha, Aryad block panchayat member and Mahila Congress Aryad panchayat committee president Marykutty Joseph, 42, was killed in a road accident here on Friday.

Ms. Joseph, who was on her way to daughter Josmi’s house on a bike with son Jobin, died when the bike collided with a private bus near the Vellakinar junction. Ms. Joseph is survived by husband Thottathil Joseph, son Jobin Joseph, and daughter Josmi. Jobin was injured in the accident.

The funeral would be on Saturday at the Poonkavu Our Lady Assumption Church.
