Bangalore: The term of D. Nagaraja as Director and Vice-Chancellor of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) has been extended till his superannuation in 2010. Though there was no official confirmation on this, it is learnt that a letter to this effect has come from Director, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, dated November 8. Dr. Nagaraja’s five-year term ended on November 6. Dr. Nagaraja took over as the head of the institute in November 6, 2002. Repeated efforts to reach Dr. Nagaraja on Friday for a confirmation of his reappointment were in vain. Registrar of NIMHANS M.V. Savitri was on leave for the day and was not available for comment either. Uncertainty over the post had been created since the premier research and medical institute went without an executive head for a day (November 7). Institute sources said that a search and select committee had not been constituted to name the next Director as per the norms of the NIMHANS Board of Management. A senior faculty member had written to the Registrar on Wednesday seeking information on the status of the Director’s post and if anyone had been named to head the institute. The Registrar in her written response to the letter had said that a copy of the letter had been faxed to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for taking “necessary action."
