“Protection of human rights in the larger national interest”

Meeting on human rights education held in Jaipur

“Every citizen needs to be aware of their rights”

JAIPUR: National Human Rights Commission member Y. Bhaskar Rao has called upon the Army and the police to play a positive role in protection of human rights of citizens in the larger national interest. The present era of globalisation warrants a good track record of human rights, he said.

Addressing a meeting on human rights education at the Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission here earlier this week, Mr. Rao said the encroachment on personal liberty and human rights of citizens by the State agencies went against the spirit of democracy and the rule of law.

“Every citizen needs to be aware of his or her human rights to meet the challenges of globalisation and demand their protection,” said Mr. Rao.

He laid emphasis on educating academicians, lawyers, Government officials and civil society about the significance of human rights.

Mr. Rao said a compulsory introduction of moral education in schools would help inculcate respect for human rights among children.

The scourge of terrorism could also be tackled by generating awareness about human rights and Gandhian values, he added.

State Human Rights Commission chairman N. K. Jain said the universities in the State had incorporated human rights education in their curriculum following the Commission’s recommendation, while public servants had been sensitised to protection of citizens’ rights.

SHRC members Jagat Singh, Dharam Singh Meena and Pukhraj Sirvi, legal experts, academicians and representatives of voluntary organisations attended the meeting.
