Welfare schemes for more artistes

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Popular Malayalam film actor and president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) Innocent said on Friday that the association had plans to expand its welfare schemes to more artistes who were in need of monetary assistance.

The comedian who won this year’s Sathyan Film award was speaking to mediapersons in connection with a meet-the-press programme organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club in the city.

“We are already providing financial assistance to nearly 51 artistes; an amount of Rs.1 lakh has been set apart for the purpose by the association,” he said. “But more than the amount of money involved, the assistance is often viewed as recognition by the artistes.”

The comedian was of the view that dubbing movies from other languages into Malayalam can ‘pose a problem to the Malayalam film industry.’

The film actor denied nurturing any political ambitions.

“You should have a particular bent of mind to be in politics. Even when I was elected as a ward councillor, I was not really competent to handle the position. A politician should be someone who is always willing and prepared to contribute something for society. I think I will be a misfit in this role.”
