Staff Correspondent

The sangha said no woman would falsely claim herself a Devadasi for a pension of Rs. 400 a month

DAVANGERE: The State unit of the Karnataka Devadasi Mahileyara Vimochana Sangha has urged the Government to commence the census of Devadasis in the State immediately, and chalk out a definite programme to improve their economic conditions.

Talking to reporters here today T.G. Renuka and Kenchamma, office bearers of the sangha, said the Kumaraswamy government had promised to conduct a survey of Devadasis and provide them certain benefits so that they would be economically stronger. Though the previous government had issued an order in this regard and distributed the census forms to Anganawadi centres, the survey is yet to commence. Meanwhile, the officers concerned looked askance at the women who approached them with applications for Devadasis’ pension, the sangha said, and added that no woman would falsely claim herself a Devadasi for a meagre pension of Rs. 400 a month.

Devadasis will stage a protest from November 12 to November 23 in 33 taluks in the State demanding that the Government fulfil their long-standing demands, which include providing two acres of lands to each Devadasi and reserve certain seats to children of Devadasis in Morarji Desai residential schools.
