NEW DELHI: China has assured India that it will help the Indian Railways in developing infrastructure including modern stations and efficient container operation and freight management. Senior Chinese officials gave the assurance to Railway Board officials who were recently on a four-day tour of that country. A high-level meeting was held to enhance cooperation between the two railway systems. Led by Railway Board chairman K. C. Jena, the Indian delegation also held discussions with Chinese Railway Minister Liu Zhijun. The Indian team was apprised of developments in the Chinese railway system including construction of world-class stations, double stack container operation and heavy haul operations. The delegation visited Nanjing and Shanghai South and travelled by a high-speed EMU train running between Shanghai and Nanjing. It saw container operation areas and visited a multimodal logistics park near Shanghai. Automatic systemsAlso on the itinerary was a freight station on the Datong-Qinhuangdao heavy haul line for coal traffic, where trains weighing up to 20,000 tonnes are hauled with electric locomotives of 12,000 hp. The delegation saw automatic train examination systems at this station, where defects in a freight train are detected with machines installed on the track.
