Teachers on the warpath

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: School and college education in Orissa is heading for a trouble with various teachers’ associations threatening to abstain from duty this month to highlight their long pending demands.

About 50,000 teachers who have been appointed as Sikshya Sahayak (SS) in government-run primary schools have drawn up a massive demonstration plan in the month of November demanding regularisation of their service.

The teachers will be holding two-day-long rallies each at block and district headquarters and then at the capital city from Nov. 20. If the teachers did not get concrete assurance from State Government during that time, They will abstain from duty from November 28 for an indefinite period. “It has been years since teachers have been appointed at a paltry salary of Rs. 1500 per month”. Souri Prasad Mishra, an SS said.

Similarly, contractual teachers appointed in different high schools are planning to go on similar kind of demonstrations from Nov.19. All Orissa Un-aided Colleges and Employees Coordination Committee (AOUCECC) also declared that their colleges would remain closed from Nov. 12 onwards.
