Celebration Time: A girl lights up a sparkler in Bhubaneswar on Friday BHUBANESWAR: Diwali, the festival of lights, was celebrated with great fervour and gaiety through out the State on Friday. Lakhs of people thronged in to the holy town of Puri, abode of Lord Jagannath, to pay homage to their ancestors. The day witnessed traders doing brisk business in selling firecrackers while people were on a shopping spree during daytime. In the morning, the exchange of sweets and pleasantries continued even as corporate houses were in forefront. As the day went down, firecrackers began to explode intermittently. But it gained momentum as soon as the darkness reigned. City was illuminated with candlelight and different lights. Deafening sounds generated from explosion of firecrackers made people come outside to watch the spectacles. However, traders’ party was spoiled by city police as it seized huge chunk of firecrackers that violated guidelines of Orissa State Pollution Control Board. By the time report was being filed, there was no report of major accident from any corner of the State. Earlier in the day, lakhs of people worshipped Lord Jagannath at Puri. It is believed that performing of a special puja at Puri on the occasion of Diwali is the most appropriate homage to ancestors
