Accident victim was admitted to the hospital with serious spinal injuries

Relatives of the patient created a ruckus in the hospital after he was declared dead

A case of obstructing a public servant on duty & voluntarily causing hurt registered, accused held

NEW DELHI: Three brothers of a patient were arrested for allegedly beating up two junior resident doctors at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here on Wednesday following his death in the hospital.

Jai Hind Verma was hit by a motorcycle on October 12 inside the AIIMS premises where he had gone to see his relative. He was admitted to the hospital with serious spinal injuries. His limbs were paralysed and he eventually died on Wednesday around 11-30 p.m.

Some 30-odd relatives of the patient including his brothers -- Santosh, Rajiv and Harinarayan -- created a ruckus in the hospital after Jai Hind was declared dead. “Jai’s brothers beat up two junior doctors and smashed the window panes of the hospital. The doctors called the security officer and also informed the police,” said a police officer.

A case of obstructing a public servant on duty and voluntarily causing hurt was registered based on the complaint of the security officer and the accused were arrested.

They were, however, later let off on bail.

Call for redress system

Terming the incident as “unfortunate”, AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association president Kumar Harsh said: “There is a need to put in place a redress system both for the patients and the doctors and strengthen relations between the two. The relatives of the patients also need to be offered counselling about their condition so that repetition of such incidents could be prevented. Also, only a limited number of relatives should be allowed to accompany the patient as is the case in private hospitals. Besides, adequate security is an important aspect that cannot be overlooked.”

The security in-charge of the ward has been suspended following the incident.
