Nallur Municipality to construct tanks to streamline water supply

M. Gunasekaran

It hopes to provide 3,000 connections by December-end

TIRUPUR: Nallur Municipality, the eastern gateway of Tirupur, awaits appointment of consultants by the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration to construct three overhead tanks, to streamline water supply in the town.

The local body, which houses hundreds of garment factories, allied units, thousands of residential colonies and settlements for migrant workers, has had an unenviable record of not having a single piped water supply connection to its households till recently.

Having given connection to nearly 2,000 buildings, its Executive Officer N. Manickam says they are now creating basic network such as laying of distribution main pipelines across the 26 sq km area to give water connections to all areas.

Areas

Despite getting daily supply of 2.5 million litres from the New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited and Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, the local body could not supply water to all the areas properly. While some parts of the town get water once in two days, others could get water once in a week.

“Non-availability of water is no more a problem for us but the infrastructure to store the water is the basic problem here,” points out Mr. Manickam.

The local body needs to construct three overhead tanks, each with 5 lakh to 10 lakh litres capacity, at VGV Nagar, Muthanampalayam Road, and Cheran Nagar. “We are planning to begin constructing an overhead tank at VGV Nagar within a month. The tank will cover six wards in the town,” he noted.

Of the 5,888 applications received from residents a year ago, the Nallur Municipality has so far given 1,800 connections. After establishing distribution network, the works would be speeded up. Mr. Manickam said that the local body would give 3,000 more water connections by the end of December.

Once the construction of OHTs is over, the Grade III municipality would be able to supply water to its residents on alternate days, he hoped. On construction of drainages and forming of roads in various parts of the infrastructure-handicapped town, the executive officer said tenders would be called for works worth Rs. 4.5 crore.
