Fertilizer scarcity set to hit rabi crops

Special Correspondent.

TIRUPATI.Though blessed with good monsoon, the farmers of Chittoor district are likely to face the problem of fertilizer shortage in the up-coming rabi season.

With copious rains which eventually made the water level rise in all the irrigation tanks and wells, farmers of the district have already started their farm operations for the season and have even planted the paddy seedlings.

But reports indicate that shortage of fertilizers due to inadequate release of stocks into the market was posing a serious problem to the farmers. Reports quoting the farmers say that delay in release of stocks into the open market by the authorities touched off an artificial scarcity giving a handle to the traders to exploit the situation to the hilt. Farmers are worried over the exorbitant rates of the fertilizers and so also over the fake variety available in the open market.

In a related development, farmers in the western mandals known for their rich tomato harvests are said to be languishing for want of remunerative price due to lack of organised marketing facilities.
