‘Skandha Sashti’ festival begins today in Palani

At Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy temple

DINDIDUL: The seven-day ‘Skandha Sashti’ festival, annihilation of Asuras, will commence at Sri Dhandayuthapaniswamy temple on Palni Hill at Palani on Saturday.

The festival will commence with ‘kaapu kattu’ ceremony at noon. At the outset, ‘kaapu,’ the holy thread, will be tied to dwarabaalakas and later to Lord Sri Vinayagar and Moolavar and Utsavamurthy, peacock, mount of Lord Murugan, and nava veerargal. Devotees will also tie ‘kaapu’ to observe ‘vratham.’

The Lord will be mounted on Siver saparam and golden sapparam and taken in procession around the temple.

Surasamharam, prime ceremony of the festival, will take place on November 15 near Padhavinayagar temple. The Lord Muthukumaraswamy will destroy all the four asuras on four giri veedhis.

Thirukkalyanam, celestial wedding, of Lord Shanmugar and goddess Sri Valli will be held the next day morning at the hill temple at Periyanayaki Amman temple. The seven-day festival will come to an end with the holy wedding. Cultural programmes have been arranged at 6 p.m. at Karthikai mandapam at the hill temple to mark the weeklong festival. Hill temple will be opened at 4 a.m. during festival days.

Security arrangements

Elaborate security arrangements will be made to provide protection to pilgrims visiting the temple from different parts of the State, the police said. Adequate force will be deployed at Sri Padhavinayagar temple, hill temple, winch station and at the bus stand.

The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (Division-IV) Limited has plans to operate special service from Dindigul, Batlagundu, Theni, Cumbum, Kumili, Karaikudi and Coimbatore for the convenience of pilgrims. Transport staff will be deployed at Palani bus stand to assist and guide devotees.
