Saplings of several horticultural crops were planted from dawn to dusk
THANK YOU: A sapling being presented to Samuthiram Panchayat president S. Subbiah.
PUDUKOTTAI: Though Local Administration Day was celebrated in all the village panchayats in the State in a grand manner recently, the one at the Samuthiram village panchayat in Pudukottai district made a difference.
The students of Government High School in Taanjoor participated in a rally in the village creating awareness on the various programmes and schemes being implemented by the village panchayat for the benefit of the rural masses.
They also motivated the people to increase the forest cover to maintain the ecological balance and check the hazards of global warming.
Samuthiram panchayat president S. Subbiah, school headmaster G. Jayakumar, and Parent-Teachers’ Association president A. Annamalai spoke.
They also planted saplings of several horticultural crops in various parts of the village from dawn to dusk.
The speakers had a pleasant time realising the growing awareness among the students about the ecological balance and their efforts for propagating the same. A surprise was still in store for them, when Mr. Subbiah and others were presented with rosewood sapling as mementoes, deviating from the customary shawl or garland. School Agriculture Teacher A. Arangan, who is also the Pudukottai district coordinator for the National Green Corps, said all the teachers and students have been extending cooperation for stepping up the green cover in Taanjoor and the surrounding villages.
