Neighbouring villages being closely monitored
DINDIGUL: Five persons were injured and ten houses damaged in a group clash between two communities at Avarampatti village in Nilakottai taluk on Thursday.
A strong posse of police personnel has been deployed in the village.
According to police sources, a group protested against the bursting of crackers on an open ground near Sri Kali Amman, Bagavathi Amman and Karuppusamy temples in the village.
The arguments reached a flashpoint and two groups started attacking each other.
“The situation is under control now,” A. Pari, Superintendent of Police, said.
The police were monitoring Kongapatti, Ethilode, Meenakshipuram, Silukkuvarpatti near Avarampatti to prevent the spread of violence to neighbouring villages.
The injured were referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai after preliminary treatment at the Nilakottai Government Hospital.
The Ammayanaickanur police have registered cases against both groups. Tension was brewing in the locality for over a fortnight following a disagreement between the two groups over performing temple rituals at the Kaaliamman temple.
Later, Revenue Divisional Officer A. Pechiammal convened a peace meeting and made alternative arrangements, acceptable to both communities for conducting poojas.
