ADILABAD: Deepavali celebrations went on until late on Friday night in Adilabad because Lakshmi puja could only be performed closer to midnight at many shops and commercial establishments. The reason for delay in the puja was shortage of pujaris/ maharajs/ priests. The imbalance between the number of commercial establishments and homes and the number of pujaris in town has been steadily increasing. According to an estimate, only around 40 priests are available for performing Lakshmi pujas in about 500 shops and business places as well as homes. This year, the ‘shubh muhurat’ or auspicious time for Lakshmi puja was between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. and beyond 10.30 p.m. Only a few privileged could manage the attendance of a given pujari at the first spell of the ‘shubh muhurat’. It was observed that anxious shopkeepers had to keep a person trailing the pujari with whom they had an appointment so that the latter did not give a miss. Some of the businessmen were lucky to end the celebrations early as desired because they had exclusive pundits who undertook the puja. Such pujaris are like members of the concerned families and are regulars during festivities and religious celebrations. As the puja lasts for 40 minutes to one hour depending upon the speed with which it is performed. Each of the pujari is paid ‘dakshina’ commensurate with his experience.
