Chief Minister’s decision to write to CJ requesting him to take permanent steps hailed BERHAMPUR: Lawyers of the Ganjam Bar Association urged the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik to get a resolution passed in the State Assembly for establishment of permanent benches of Orissa High Court in Berhampur and Sambalpur. They have welcomed the recent decision of the Chief Minister to write to the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court requesting him to take steps so that permanent benches of the High Court could be established to serve the people of south and western Orissa. It may be noted that the bar associations of western Orissa were continuing with agitation for a High Court bench in Sambalpur. A similar agitation had also been started by the united forum of bar associations of south Orissa under the leadership of Ganjam bar association for a High Court bench in Berhampur. Easy accessibilitySenior Advocate of Ganjam bar association, Bhagaban Sahu said this decision of the Chief Minister is step towards providing easy accessibility of legal facilities to the dalits and tribal living in south Orissa, for whom approaching the High Court in Cuttack is a major problem due to distance and expense involved. He as well as the president of bar association, Manoj Patnaik however wanted the Chief Minister to expedite the process involved in establishing High Court benches through Legislative process. “As per the norms the State Assembly should pass a resolution for the establishment of High Court benches in the State, which would be sent to the Central Law Ministry for necessary action,” said Mr Sahu. Then the Central Law Minister would have to bring in a bill proposing establishment of High Court benches in Orissa which has to be passed in the Parliament. Lawyers of Ganjam Bar Association, Sanjit Panigrahy felt that the State Assembly should pass the resolution for establishment of High Court benches in its next session. The lawyers of the Ganjam bar have already sent a letter to the Chief Minister to initiate the process for this before the next Assembly session.
