Sentenced for rape

New Delhi: Terming his crime “graver than murder”, a court here has sentenced to life a suspended Delhi Police beat constable, who raped a woman at gun point in a south Delhi area, where he was posted, three years ago.

“Keeping in view the fact that the convict is from the police force and he was deputed as beat constable in the area where he raped a helpless woman, he has committed a heinous crime against humanity, graver than committing murder,” Additional Sessions Judge V. K. Bansal said. Kumar, who was known to a 33-year-old woman as a beat constable of her area at Kalkaji in south Delhi, had gained entry into her house-cum-boutique on the pretext of drinking water on December 23, 2004, the prosecution claimed.

The victim had opened the door for him in good faith. Kumar then allegedly put his service revolver on her head and raped her.
