NEW DELHI: The second anniversary of the martyrdom of Major Gopi Singh, who was ADC to President K. R. Narayanan and President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and who laid down his life while fighting terrorists in Kashmir, was observed at a meeting organised at Major Gopi Singh Rathore Park in New Rajender Nagar here on Saturday. Close friends, associates and admirers of Major Gopi attended the meeting and recalled his extraordinary qualities as a soldier, poet, writer and humanist. Mimamsak Jha, his close associate, recited some of his poems and explained their meaning. He referred to his insightful poem “Dar asal” and said Major Gopi had the yearning to see the positive qualities in personalities well projected as villains. Also, he said, the late officer tried to reflect the finer sensibilities in numerous poems he wrote while performing tough duties in Jammu and Kashmir. Director in the Prime Minister’s Office S. N. Sahu read out a portion of Major Gopi’s diary written during his posting in Kashmir. Major Gopi wrote that the threat of terrorism was a threat to the composite culture of India and stated that any attempt to endanger India’s composite cultural heritage would eventually endanger the world as a whole. All those who attended the meeting admired the mature analysis of Major Gopi in understanding the phenomenal importance of India’s composite culture from the point of view of the security and stability of the world as a whole. The meeting concluded with the screening of an NDTV programme on Major Gopi which was produced during his funeral on November 12, 2007, in Dehra Dun and telecast consecutively on the channel for two days.
