It will be a dark day: Kharge

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday said that the day when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assumes power supported by the Janata Dal (Secular) in the State will be a dark day for the people of Karnataka.

Reacting to the invitation extended by Governor Rameshwar Thakur to the leader of the BJP-Janata Dal (S) coalition, Mr. Kharge said the Congress had already predicted what would happen to the well-being of the people, particularly the minorities and Dalits in the State when the BJP comes to power in south India for the first time.

Although the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government had revoked the President’s rule on the basis of the numerical strength of the two parties proving their majority in the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Kharge said this would be an unholy and unstable Government. The new Government would not be able to take up any welfare measures for the poorer sections, because of their squabble, he added.

The Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, N. Dharam Singh, who echoed the feelings of Mr. Kharge, said that all the failures which the people saw during the 20-month rule of the Government led by H.D. Kumaraswamy would continue and they would create more trouble to it.

He said the Congress had been maintaining that the Legislative Assembly should be dissolved and elections be held for getting a fresh mandate.

But it had never aspired to form the Government with the support of any party, he added.
