CHENNAI: A Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus fatally knocked down a two-wheeler rider on Taluk Office Road, Saidapet, on Friday.

Police said J. Surya Kumar (28) of First Cross Street, Dhandeeswaram, Velachery was going home at around 12.30 p.m. when the MTC bus from Tiruvottiyur to Tambaram hit the two-wheeler following which he fell on the ground. He suffered head injuries and was declared ‘brought dead’ at a private hospital.

The victim was not wearing helmet at the time of the accident, the police said. The Adyar Traffic Investigation police have registered a case.

Demonstration

Following the accident, a group of irate residents from neighbouring areas resorted to a demonstration.

Condemning the one-way traffic system introduced a few months ago in the area, the residents said the speeding vehicles and the absence of traffic police personnel to regulate the traffic posed threat to the pedestrians.

Such fatal accidents on the Taluk Office Road-Sardar Patel Road-Little Mount stretch and along the Velachery Main Road had increased, especially after sunset and at odd hours.

Whenever accidents occurred, traffic was paralysed, they said.

A posse of police officers arrived on the scene on Friday and pacified the agitators .

Many pedestrians said crossing the road was possible only when traffic police personnel were on duty.

A senior citizen, who visits the church in Little Mount on Sundays, said motorists did not bother to stop even when physically challenged persons and elders were crossing the road.

A woman said policemen should be posted at the accident prone points on the entire one-way similar to the arrangement near the Raj Bhavan gate (employees residential quarters on S.P.Road).

Pavement hit

On Monday, an MTC bus plying between Tambaram and Broadway hit a pavement near the Church in Little Mount.

Following the accident, traffic was affected for over two hours. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident occurred after the bus driver avoided hitting a pedestrian who was inebriated.

When contacted a senior police officer said the one-way traffic system in the area had facilitated better movement of vehicles.

He said the need to post additional police personnel to regulate traffic and help the pedestrians would be looked into.
