TIRUCHI: The district administration has decided to recommend conferment of the State bravery award posthumously on a good Samaritan who was drowned after saving a college student from the swirling waters of the Cauvery river a couple of months back. Pandaram (40), who was working as a sales representative in a private company, was just returning after a bath in the river when he spotted a couple of youths struggling for their lives in the river after being caught in the strong currents.
Pandaram jumped into the river and managed to rescue Yogesh, a first year B.Tech student of the National Institute of Technology here. His attempt to rescue the other student, however, failed. He drowned along with the student on September 9.
The district administration has now decided to bear the expense of the school education of Pandaram’s two young daughters, Gajalakshmi (8) and Rudra (6). “The expenditure incurred for their education up to Plus Two would be borne by the District Welfare Committee,” Mr.Vachhani told The Hindu. A few academicians of the City have promised to support the children for their higher education too, he said.
Pandaram’s wife, Indira, was presented a financial assistance of Rs.25,000 from the District Welfare Committee funds on Friday. Pandaram’s name is being recommended for the State bravery award, Mr.Vachhani said.
