“Government should not interfere with students’ right to choose the type of education they want”
MADURAI: The State Government’s move to introduce common syllabus for different streams of school education has come under criticism from the Matriculation Schools’ Association of Virudhunagar district.
In a statement here on Saturday, the association said that the Government should not interfere with the basic right of parents and students in choosing the type of education they wanted and also indicated that it would go to court if an order for common syllabus was passed.
The president of Association of Kamarajar (Virudhunagar) District Matriculation and Higher Secondary Schools (Sattur), A. Rajendran, described the move as “retrograde and detrimental” as this year’s class X public examination was expected to have a new base mark of 500.
“Matriculation students have been trained to write the examination for 1,100 marks and it is too late to implement the new base mark of 500 this year because both teachers and students will be in confusion,” the association statement said.
Stating that diluting the quality of education to the level of Government schools was a retrograde move, Mr. Rajendran said that the Government should not intervene with the types of school education because in higher education also there were different streams of college education with different syllabi and different assessment methods. The association appealed to the State Government to stop working on implementing a common syllabus and let the Matriculation schools retain their identity.
Agitation by students
It threatened to organise a State-level agitation by students, teachers and parents of Matriculation schools “and if an order for common syllabus is passed, it will be challenged in court.”
