VS’ remark: DCC plans dharna

Staff Reporter

Chief Minister had said that residents of capital city must cope with floods like people in other parts of the State.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The District Congress Committee has decided to organise a dharna at Thampanoor on November 13 in protest against the Chief Minister’s remark that people of Thiruvananthapuram should put up with floods like people elsewhere in the State.

A press note issued here said this remark, coming from the person who heads the State’s administration, was tantamount to insulting the people of Thiruvananthapuram. The statement also revealed the government’s approach to developmental issues. The people of Thiruvananthapuram voted the LDF to power in the elections to the Parliament, the State Assembly and city corporation. These representatives of the people should make clear Mr. Achuthanandan’s views on this subject, the press note said.

The pervious UDF government had put in place a plan to prevent rain-induced floods in Thiruvananthapuram. This project, for which Rs. 7 crores was spent, had been derailed.

The LDF government sabotaged the development programme formulated by the UDF for Thiruvananthapuram. The Oommen Chandy government had initiated urban development work to the tune of Rs. 1,000 crores. All these works are in limbo today, the press note said. The dharna will be inaugurated by Mr. Chandy, the press note added.

The district committee of the UDF too condemned Mr. Achuthanandan’s remarks as being unworthy of a democratic ruler.

‘Withdraw statement’

The Chief Minister should withdraw his statement and should apologise to the people of the capital city, the press note added.

The Capital Development Council will organise a ‘Paura Sadassu’ at Bakery Junction on November 12 in protest against the stalled development activities in the city, a press note said.
