Gopal Gandhi rebuts charge

KOLKATA: After criticising the Left Front government and the CPI(M) for the turmoil in Nandigram, West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi on Saturday sought to contest the CPI(M)’s charge that he had said nothing on the manhandling of a Communist Party of India MLA, Illyas, by the Trinamool Congress in April.

In a release, Mr. Gandhi’s press secretary said CPI(M) leader Shyamal Chakraborty was right in saying the Governor did not issue any public statement on the incident. But he did write to Mr. Illyas on April 29.

In his letter, Mr. Gandhi had said: “I am most distressed to learn of the physical attack on you two days ago in Nandigram resulting in injuries. Such violence is deplorable. I wish you speedy recovery.” Mr. Chakraborty had criticised the Governor for ‘not expressing concern’ for Mr. Ilyas. — PTI
