CHENNNAI: Inter-modal transport facilities will be provided at nine railway stations in Mass Rapid Transit System for the convenience of passengers, Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said here on Saturday.

He told reporters that the facilities were available in some stations which would be utilised. Nine stations where the facilities would be provided were, Chennai Beach, Chindatripet, Chepauk, Tiruvallikeni, Light House, Kotturpuram, Tiruvanmiyur, Taramani and Velacheri.

He said in these stations, bus bays would be provided with approach roads. Stations such as Tirumailai, Mandaveli, Greenways Road, Kasturba Nagar were close to main roads where bus facilities were available. The Perungudi station lacked a proper approach road. Steps would be taken to provide it.

The Minister, who earlier inspected the stations along with the State Transport Commissioner, Corporation Commissioner, metro transport managing director and railway officials, said the objective of the visit was to find out facilities to be provided to passengers. Admitting that the maintenance of many stations was poor, Mr. Velu said he had directed the Chennai Divisional Railway Manager to post Railway Protection Force personnel at stations to prevent anti-social elements from entering them.

In Park Town the road from the Poonamallee Road side, which was being misused, would be properly maintained with lighting facilities. In Chintadripet, though a pucca bus stand had been provided it was not being utilised. Metro transport officials agreed to make use of it. To facilitate this, the gates would be widened.

In Chetpet the road abetting the Government Kasturba Hospital would be widened to enable buses to reach the station. At Tiruvallikeni station, the approach road would be widened and proper lighting provided.

At the Light House station there was enough space to provide bus shelters. At Kottupuram station the road on the eastern side would be widened.

In Tiruvanmiyur space was available for setting up a bus stand. Bus connectivity would be provided at Taramani and Velacheri stations. The Minister said works pertaining to passenger amenities, which were pending, would be taken up immediately.

He said the Transport Commissioner had agreed to coordinate with the Railways for executing works such as providing links and bus bays.

The Minister said he would make one more inspection in the middle of this month along with officials.

He was accompanied by Chennai Railway Divisional Manager Man Singh, Transport Commissioner C.P. Singh and Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni.

When reporters sought a possible date for inauguration of MRTS services to Velacheri, the Minister said the Chief Minister would declare it open soon.
