NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded that the Centre ask West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi to send a detailed report on the continuing violence in Nandigram. Party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad condemned the CPI(M) statement berating the Governor’s comments on the Nandigram situation. The BJP said the Governor’s remarks were based on an “objective assessment of the situation.” Critical of the CPI(M)’s “different standards,” the BJP said the party, while repeatedly talking about the 2002 Gujarat riots, was ignoring “the reality of Nandigram.” In Purbo Medinipur district, under which comes Nandigram, the CPI(M) cadre had created an atmosphere of terror, the BJP alleged. “PM keeping mum”It charged the Prime Minister with remaining silent on the grim situation in the district. Mr. Prasad said even mediapersons and civil rights activists were being prevented from entering Nandigram. “We want a full and objective report from the Governor and prompt action to bring peace to Nandigram and see that the people’s suffering stops.”
