IED explodes on NEEPCO tower in Assam, ULFA hand suspected

Sibsagar: An improvised explosive device (IED) planted by suspected ULFA militants exploded on an electric tower of the North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) in Sibsagar district of Assam late on Friday night, official sources on Saturday.

No one was injured in the explosion and the damage to the tower located at Mahamora Konwar village was minimal, the sources said.

During the week, four IEDs were found by the police and the Army in Sibsagar district.

Disaster averted

A major railway disaster was averted on Thursday when an IED planted on an electric transformer in Borhat railway station by suspected ULFA ultras was found.

On Tuesday, an IED was recovered from an ONGC oil pipeline and another near the superintendent of police office.

The sources said the recent recoveries were made after two massive search operations along oil pipelines and public places following intelligence inputs that the ULFA would intensify subversive activities targeting vital installations and the security forces in the run-up to the panchayat elections in Assam that is to be held next month. — PTI
