Centre clears Rs.230-crore package

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union government has cleared the second instalment of a Rs.300-crore package for Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi under the BSUP (Basic Service for the Urban Poor) programme aimed at upliftment of slum dwellers.

Announcing the sanction of financial assistance, Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said the programme would aid the comprehensive development of slums in the two cities.

The second instalment totalling Rs.230 crore would be utilised for housing, construction of toilets, drains, renovation of houses and relocation of settlements. The Centre had sanctioned an assistance of Rs.70 crore earlier. Thiruvananthapuram will receive an assistance of Rs.170 crore while Kochi will get Rs.130 crore. Eighty per cent of the assistance will be in the form of grant from the Centre while the State government and municipal corporations will foot the balance amount. The Minister said the amount sanctioned for Kerala would be for implementation of Plan projects up to the year 2011. The State government has identified the Kudumbasree Mission as the nodal agency for the project. Mr. Kutty urged officials to ensure that the projects were completed within the specified period.
