A walk to prevent diabetes

Bangalore: On a sunny Sunday morning, when most people would be lounging at home getting those extra hours of sleep, a few like-minded people decided to take those extra steps for a good cause.

The Bangalore Diabetes Club in association with Apollo R.M. Hospital organised a “walk to prevent diabetes” to celebrate the World Diabetes Day which is observed every year on November 14.

Hundreds of people from various organisations, including medical professionals and students took part in the walk, which aimed to create awareness about the need for exercise and a good diet to prevent diabetes.

“A large number of people in India are getting diabetes and it is the younger population who are increasingly falling prey to the illness, because of various factors such as stress, lifestyle and food habits, lack of exercise and genetic factors.

We want to spread the message that exercise and a healthy lifestyle can help prevent diabetes and among those who already have the illness, can help keep blood sugar levels in control,” said V. Shanker, consultant physician and vice-president of the Bangalore Diabetes Club said.

The walk started at Apollo R.M. Hospital and covered Palace Guttahalli and Malleswaram before culminating at the hospital.

On the occasion, free blood sugar tests were also conducted.
