Regulatory framework need of the hour

The Central and State Governments are responsible for the poor quality of education at higher levels, as they are giving importance to quantitative growth, rather than qualitative growth, of higher education. Indiscriminate sanctioning of new private colleges and universities is leading to wholesale commercialisation of education.

It is noteworthy that Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandhreeswari, at a recent conference, stressed the need for the development of an effective regulatory framework to provide quality education at the college and university level.

She also expressed disappointment over poor quality of higher education. The authorities concerned should initiate steps for

the constitution of a regulatory framework, besides taking certain precautions before issuing permissions for new colleges and universities.

Check attacks on mediamen

Attacks on journalists seem to have become regular in the State. Journalists are subjected to attacks in one corner of the State or the other either by the henchmen of political leaders or by the police. Since free press is an important organ of democracy, the Government should allow the media to discharge its duties freely by ensuring safety to journalists.

Instead of fuming over the media, the police and the politicians can use the media reports to assess their performance.

I request the Minister

for Information and

Public Relations to take necessary steps to put an end to the attacks on media persons.

Advice to people’s representatives

It has become a daily routine for political leaders to participate in private functions, including inaugurations of showrooms. Even as there is no release of funds from the Government for that particular establishment, our elected representatives make their presence felt at such functions and release the photographs to newspapers. Is it not a waste of valuable time of our MLAs, MPs and Ministers to participate in such programmes. They are expected to dedicate their time to take up welfare activities for the benefit of common people. I request the Central and State Governments to make a legislation preventing the elected representatives from participating in private functions.

Disaster management

Disasters like cyclones, epidemics and drought create havoc with people. There should be a well-equipped disaster management system to rescue people on a war-footing basis during such calamities and disasters. Even as scientists of the Meteorological Department predict some calamities, the local administration in many places is not equipped with safety mechanisms.

The recent downpour in Nellore, Prakasam and Kadapa districts is a classic example to showcase the lack of preparedness of respective district administrations to meet the exigency.

As a result, people faced several difficulties and the normal life was thrown out of gear for many days.
