GMAS threatens to launch agitation against SEZs

Special Correspondent

Team to meet the Chief Minister today

PANAJI: Goa’s Movement Against Special Economic Zones (GMAS), a body spearheading an agitation against the State Government for its approval to SEZs without prior study, has warned that it will launch an agitation if the Government “fails” to revoke the permission granted to SEZs by November 20.

Convenor of GMAS Matanhy Saldanha, former Tourism Minister, said that on Saturday that the GMAS would meet Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Monday and submit a memorandum demanding withdrawal of permission given to special economic zones in Goa.

The former Minister reiterated the apprehension of the agitators that indiscriminate permission to SEZs would trigger an inward migration in pursuit of jobs which would burden the infrastructure and other resources. This, he felt, the tiny State could ill-afford. The GMAS, which comprises political parties, non-governmental organisations and social groups, has sought an immediate freeze on work on the notified SEZs at Keri in Central Goa and Verna in south Goa.

It has demanded that the Government refrain from notifying the five SEZs proposed, one at Sancoale, three in Verna and one at Soccoro.

These SEZs have been approved by the Centre.
