THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: P.K. Prakash, a journalist with the Madhyamam newspaper, has won this year’s Ambedkar Media Award instituted by the State government to encourage media coverage of issues concerning the backward sections of society. He won the award for a series of reports titled ‘Bhoomiyude Jathi,’ (The caste of the earth) published in the newspaper, which tries to examine the extent to which the Dalits have benefited from land reforms in the State. The award carries a purse of Rs.30,000, in addition to a commemorative plaque, Minister for the Welfare of Backward and Scheduled Communities A.K. Balan announced at a press conference here on Sunday. P. Binu Roshni, a research scholar at the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) here, won a ‘special jury award’ for an article titled ‘Nammude Schoolukal Arku Vendi,’ published in the Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishat journal Sastragathi. The article is based on the analysis of field data collected by her for a project examining educational backwardness among the backward sections. This award carries a purse of Rs.10,000, in addition to a plaque. The jury could not select any journalist for the awards for visual media and broadcast media since no quality entries were received, Mr. Balan said.
